Julien de Smedt was educated at Superior Architecture Institute Saint Luc, Brussels (1995); Superior Architecture Institute of the French Community La Cambrfe, Brussels (1995-1996); Architecture School of Paris-Belleville (1996-1997) Southern California Institute of Architecture (Sci-Arc), Los Angeles (1999); and The Barlett, London (1998-2000).

In 1997-1998, he worked in the office of OMA/Rem Koolhaus in Rotterdam and in 1999, he opened an office in New York. In 2001, he co-founded PLOT in Copenhagen with Bjark Ingels. In 2005, he founded JDS Architects—a multidisciplinary office that focuses on architecture and design from large-scale urban planning projects to the design of furniture.
