Introduction

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design is proud to announce the results of the museum's annual GOOD DESIGN competition. This year we received hundreds of entries from all over the world and from the world's most prestigious industrial and graphic design firms and manufacturers.

The judging took place at the Hotel Kämp in downtown Helsinki in early November. The jury included some of Finland's most important designers and journalists: Kaisa Blomstedt of deSign; Severi Blomstedt of Blomstedt & Klockars Architects; Pasi Myllyniemi of ESPA Systems Ltd.; Jorma Pitkonen of ed-design ltd.; and Markku Valkonen of Retrett Oy Ltd.

The jury granted Good Design Awards to over 180 industrial design projects and 35 graphic designs from 17 countries. While U.S. designers and manufacturers continue to sweep the GOOD DESIGN Awards (a total of 127) for electronics with superb new designs for computers, audio equipment, televisions, memory scanners, and telephone systems, German designers and manufacturers won 43 Awards for automobiles and motorcycles, home furnishings, and textiles. Italian designers and manufacturers mostly from the lighting and furniture industries won a total of 14 Awards with designers from Great Britain winning 8 Awards. Austria and Japan won 5 Awards, mostly for graphics and packaging, while Canada came in with 12 Awards. Designers and industry leaders from Finland won 10 Awards and Switzerland 7 Awards. Sweden won 6 Awards, while Thailand and Taiwan won 2 Awards. China, Denmark, Australia, Portugal, Ireland, Slovenia, and Norway one Award each.

Among the international awarded manufacturers for 2001 are: BMW AG, Bose Corporation; Siemens, Hewlett Packard, Tupperware, Microsoft, Amer Sport OY, Steelcase, OXO International, Apple Computer, Eastman Kodak Company, Compaq Computers, LG Digital TV, Motorola, Inc., Palm, Inc., Logitech, Harman/Kardon, Nike, Nissan, WMF, Hoesch, AB Electrolux, Krups, Cuisinart, Maytag, Rowenta, LucePlan S.p.A., Ingersoll-Rand, Fiskars, Robert Bosch, and American Airlines.

The Awards this year were for the following catagories: electronics, sports equipment, children's products, furniture, office products, industrial equipment, fabric/textiles, automotive/transportation, urban furniture/architecture, tabletop, kitchen, and bath, household appliances, household products, lighting, hardware/tools, personal products, and graphics and packaging-sure to influence our environments and the ways in which we live, work, and play around the world and in the new millenium.
