The Chicago Athenaeum Announces the winners of the 30th Annual American Architecture Awards—the Industry’s Oldest, Largest, and Most Prestigious Awards Program that Honors the Best New Buildings and Urban Planning Projects from Across the U.S. and Beyond

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (DECEMBER 1, 2024)
— The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, together with The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, have announced the winners of the 2024 American Architecture Awards®—the profession’s oldest and largest awards program that honors the nation’s best new buildings, landscape architecture, and urban planning by leading design firms practicing from across the 50 United States and also globally.

Now in its 30th season, The American Architecture Awards were first organized as an effort to publicize and promote the achievements of American architects and the importance of American architecture internationally, as well as to strengthen the stature and prestige of American design across the globe.

“Since its inception in 1994,” states Christian Narkiewicz-Laine, architecture critic and President/CEO of The Chicago Athenaeum, “the program has acceded its original mission awarding thousands of projects by small and large American firms participating over the years from New York to Los Angeles, from Minneapolis to Dallas, including foreign firms with offices in the United States.”

“The program emphasizes the pivotal role designers have in confronting climate change, sustainability, and environmental concerns, as well as shining a global spotlight on those architects striving to improve the built environment for generations to come.”

“This year’s winners demonstrate the absolute transformative power of architecture and Good Design in solving some of the toughest social issues concerning housing shortages, urban repair and urban regeneration.”

“This year over 200 projects were selected by a jury from a shortlist of 600 for their inspiring levels of creativity, innovation, and attention to detail as a means and ways of expressing a profound appreciation for meaningful architecture that champions a positive impact on everyday life,” states Narkiewicz-Laine.

Most inspiring were the many restorations and renovations that captured top awards for affordable housing and community centered design by such firms as the University of Arkansas Community Design Center, Hastings Architecture, WXY architecture + urban design, ODA-Architecture, Mitchell Giurgola Architects, Solomon Cordwell Buenz, Messana O’Rorke, DLR Group, MBB Architects, Dake Wells Architecture, Gabellini Sheppard Associates, Tryba Architects, PBDW Architects, and Herzog de Meuron.
