Scuba Modular Design Furniture Collection | 2021-2022

Designer: Davide Tonizzo, designD, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Manufacturer: Cosimo-Hework, Central Hong Kong SAR

Scuba is a modular furniture system comprised of sofas, chairs, ottomans and benches that have an aquatic feel. The name is inspired by the cylindrical tanks used by underwater divers. This organic aesthetic makes Scuba not only suitable for contract use but also residential applications.

The parts of the system are simple in form. A relatively flat seat cushion with cylindrical edges forms the base of each product. This element is then topped with an armrest that is a perfect cylinder. Both elements are like “scuba tanks”.

The system makes use of a “layered” approach to create the different pieces of the collection. The base seat which is used to form an ottoman or benches is comprised of a self-supporting cushion with an internal structure and 4 legs that are attached at each of the four corners.

The next layer involves seatbacks that can be added to create sofas or chairs to form 3 seat, 2 seat and single seat configurations. A 2 seater, face-to-face version is available which is ideal for collaborative activities is also available along with a hybrid bench with one seatback.

By specifying a longer leg, an armrest can be added. As well as supporting the armrest, the longer legs can also host a series of round tables. The table option can accommodate a laptop or tablet for more work intensive settings.

With the sides of seating products being straight, groupings of one or more chairs/sofas are easily accomplished. This gives the system more versatility in commercial settings as well as saving space. Cushions and seatbacks are upholstered in flannelette and the legs are made from ash.

The cushion was kept as thin as possible to save weight and allow for easier onsite reconfiguration. The visually lightweight feel is in keeping with the aquadynamic design language.

Dimensions are as follows: 1 seater length = 895mm, 2 seater length = 1512mm, 3 seater length = 1800. Depth = 770mm. Height = 860mm.
