The Magellan 9900i & 9600i represent the latest Datalogic portfolio of high-performance, multi-plane scanner/scales designed to speed up shopping in the busiest retail checkout environments while also offering groundbreaking new Artificial Intelligence (AI) options that simplify checkout and reduce losses for the retailer. These new innovative features include color cameras to capture high-resolution images of items on the scanner platter and neural processors to allow AI execution inside the scanner while simultaneously reading 1D and 2D barcodes.
The design teams did extensive ethnographic research and optimized the new portfolio to address global health challenges while improving the user experience. The portfolio offers two form factors. The 9600i has a 5” bonnet while the 9900i features a unique 3” bonnet height allowing Retailers to lower the Point of Sale (POS) or Self-Checkout touchscreens to better accommodate ADA consumers. Three platter sizes ensure the scanner is ergonomically positioned for both standing and seated cashiers. The need for frequent cleaning and disinfecting also helped to inform the design details. We removed unnecessary part lines where dirt and debris can collect ensuring easy cleaning and the reduction of liquid and disinfectant puddling. Hidden speaker ports and flush capacitive touch buttons were other opportunities to remove seams and openings for dirt or germ collection. In addition, the human interface was improved with four LED status indicators integrated into the bonnet for clear visual communication to cashiers and consumers.
With high-resolution digital imagers in all planes, the Magellan excels at reading 1D and 2D barcodes seamlessly, but integrated loss prevention technology sets a new industry standard for resolving “shrink”. The All-Weights™ scale platter design provides a weighing surface on top of the bonnet, allowing the user to properly weigh long produce. ScaleSentry™ uses infrared beams to detect produce incorrectly placed outside the weighing area. Optional upgrades enable the Magellan to capture high-resolution images of items on the platter and utilize AI software that can identify those items.
The Magellan 9900i & 9600i Scanner/Scale continues the legacy design goals increasing efficiency through scanning performance and reduced shrink. The 9900i & 9600i represent a fundamental design shift using breakthrough technology to bring to market the first truly new approach to high-volume checkout scanning in many years.
