KOS Ticket Vending Machine interface has been designed to be at the forefront of digital usability and innovation by combining ease of use and a wide array of features accessible to all kind of users.

In order to deliver a product that fulfills the user’s expectations and needs, the KOS Ticket Vending Machine UI has been designed starting by conducting several interviews and tests in Sweden. The main goals of this testing activities were to establish parameters, functionalities and habits which would drive the development of the interface which would eventually consider:

• Who are the users of the machine.

• What actions do they perform on the machine and what is their main purpose of use.

• What they would want to machine to have.

The Kos TVM UI is a new paradigm in ticket vending machines and has been developed using state of the art user experience and user interface methodologies in order to provide a template for simple yet effective interactions.

The KOS UI was developed in collaboration with the Region Kalmar Län Organization and it replaces a 10-years-old bus and train product which even the most advanced users struggled to use. The new experience relies a big, bright and precise display which is outdoor-ready as well as resistant to vandalism and tempering.

Streamlining the experience to include new features and providing all possible customers with the best use flow possible. This was achieved by 4 separate test sessions executed during the development process which validated our initial concept and confirmed the final product. During these test sessions, the interface teams leveraged common testing methodologies as well as a virtual reality environment to help the validation of concepts and to test the usability of the interface through the different types of normal user (1 to 99 percentile) as well as user with limited mobility (wheelchair)

The UI has been developed as a design system and was eventually diversified in four graphic styles to satisfy each of the four Swedish counties in which it will be released. Prioritizing the most common path while retaining secondary options was identified as the best way to move forward to speed up the process for frequent passengers while giving one-time-user the ability to customize their journeys to their needs. The goal of the team was to enhance the mobile experiences connected to the app by providing a innovative and responsive physical product to serve as "safety beacons" to comply with all possible user journeys.
