Client: mnmMOD
The Dawnsknoll home is a classic Minarc design that centers on three aspects of the firm’s philosophy: sustainability, color, and space. The green practices and selection of sustainable products applied to this project achieve both esthetic and eco-conscious objectives, while realizing construction costs that are comparable to conventional methods.
Minarc’s interest in simple, eco-conscious design centers on creating a truly healthy environment throughout the home. The Dawnsknoll home was able to achieve this starting with the use of mnmMOD, a new sustainable construction technique developed by the Minarc pair. mnmMOD is a panelized building system that features the economy and waste-reduction of pre-fab while yielding ‘net-zero’ efficiency. The mnmMOD system allows for a significant reduction of manpower during construction. Builders further benefit from its rapid construction process that replaces standard wood frame building techniques. Green methods and materials are not necessarily more expensive, so throughout the home Minarc recycled, repurposed, and reused to the fullest extent. For example, a key feature is the use of recycled tires for the rubber material used on the bathroom sinks, the kitchen counters, and juice bar cabinetry, complemented by the use of cork. There has been a conscious effort to employ materials in their most organic form. Paint, tile, and carpet have been eliminated from the house entirely, while 90% of the furnishings are reused or repurposed.
Sustainability went beyond the materials used in this project. Design elements are oriented to take optimum advantage of natural light and cross ventilation, significantly reducing utility costs. Natural ventilation ushered in through interior/exterior courtyards and large sliding glass panels in the master bedroom and living room cools the home with fresh circulating breezes. And when needed, rooms are warmed through solar thermal radiant floor heating.
Inspired by the drama of nature’s landscapes, the design and use of color creates contrasting interiors that stimulate the senses. Like a volcanic lava flow, the deep orange island countertop cuts across the main space creating a multi-functional gathering place at the heart of the home. An abundance of warm, natural wood cabinets define the kitchen while framing an oversized backsplash reminiscent of glacier blue ice. The swimming pool offers the tranquil setting of a deep blue lagoon. Upstairs, bookshelves made of white Corian panels evocative of sheets of ice, function to define each unique living quarter.
Function and space are important factors in creating a well-defined and inhabitable environment. The heated patio and fireplace of the outdoor dining “room” make the most of indoor/outdoor living, while the river rocks blanketing the exterior courtyard provide for a soothing ambiance. A hanging bed on the balcony further helps to unite interior and exterior spaces.
Floor material is seamlessly connected in an unobtrusive, yet whimsical manner, enhancing the flow and sense of space throughout the home. To further maximize the use of space, the “vanishing” kitchen chairs store easily under the island. Additional storage can be found hidden in the console behind the master bed, while the lava-like, black shoe drawer beneath the coat closet doubles as a bench for changing shoes.
