Located on the campus of the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, among traditional architectural works and large gardens, Truclam Coffee appears as a small cafe embracing its heritage, recreating a symbolic image of Vietnamese village: Banyan tree - Water well - Communal yard. More than just a place for respite, Truclam Coffee serves as a hub for showcasing, educating, and experience in Vietnamese handicrafts.
The transformation of this space began with the renovation of a dilapidated cement structure that not only marred the aesthetic charm but also failed to harmonize with its natural surroundings. The renovation process adhered to a set of principles centered on Maximum conservation, Optimum function, Environmental friendliness, and Contextual suitability.
In an effort to minimize waste and expenses, the existing building block was meticulously preserved, allowing for the reduction of construction waste. The resulting design incorporates multi-directional expansion spaces that seamlessly weave around existing trees, effectively doubling the usable area while fostering a closer connection with nature.
Mindful of sustainability, the project exclusively utilizes natural and lightweight materials with high reusability, such as earth, bamboo, steel, and glass. A distinctive feature is the 40cm thick soil wall enveloping the entire exterior, complemented by a bamboo roof and expansive glass doors.
This innovative blend of materials not only imparts a fresh aesthetic but also establishes a harmonious dialogue with the traditional architectural structures dotting the museum grounds. This commitment to traditional architecture not only enhances the educational value but also sparks inspiration for visitors, offering a unique and immersive experience.
