At Dell Technologies, customer relationships are the ultimate differentiator. For this new Sustainable Modernized Packaging, the designers aimed at providing positive unboxing experiences for customers and a highly sustainable solution. The packaging redesign affected multiple lines of businesses including Latitude, Precision and XPS brands – impacting teams and processes across the organization globally.

Dell’s Moonshot Sustainability Goals for packaging added another challenge – by 2030, 100% of packaging will be made from recycled or renewable material. The decision was made early on in this project that the team should aim to meet the goals sooner through the redesign effort. This effort drove change throughout different product portfolios to take steps towards meeting Dell’s 2030 initiatives. To meet the challenge and lead a successful launch of the new packaging, a core team was created to drive this program forward and connect the different teams.

The architects were able to successfully launch 24 programs on a very rapid timeline, around 9 months. The design process separated the packaging redesigns into two main focus categories: 1. Premium Packaging 2. Enhanced Packaging The Premium Packaging was allocated for the high tiered products while Enhanced Packaging was geared toward improving the overall consumer experience across the business.

The team collected insights from consumer feedback, industry research and consumer interviews with a focus on sustainability and logistics. In our client interviews the team discussed how the packaging is being used, customer pain points, highlights, end user experience and sustainability. Both package categories had to be deployed globally and different power cord configurations needed to be considered along with volume of sales.

The architectural team wanted to reduce the amount of plastic in all packaging, and in support of the 2030 sustainability goals, make sure that the materials were sourced from recycled or renewable resources. This global packaging modernization initiative has made a huge impact on helping Dell Technologies achieve its overall 2030 Moonshot environmental sustainability goals.

The percentage of recycled content in Dell Technologies packaging in 2021 was 87%. With the launch of this modernization packaging initiative, it is moving closer to the 2030 goal of 100% recycled or renewable materials. The initiative resulted in a 16% decrease in packaging thickness and a resulting 18%-20% consolidation of pallet load stacking. This makes it easier for handling equipment to transport the packaging, increasing overall efficiency and lowering logistical costs.
