The Volvo EX90 is designed to allow Volvo Cars to deliver on their promise to become a fully electric car company by 2030 while also meeting customer demand for a 7-passenger vehicle that can carry a family and their luggage. Amongst the first fully electric 3-row family vehicles, the Volvo EX90 balances demand for large vehicles with a responsibility to contribute to a cleaner, safer world for everyone. More sustainable driving Revealed on November 9, 2022, the 2024 Volvo EX90 rides on a dedicated electric platform that means drivers no longer need to decide between practicality and environmental friendliness. Offering up to 300 miles of tailpipe emission-free driving range and the ability to charge from 10-80% in about 30 minutes, the Volvo EX90 expands the population of people and families that have the option to choose an electric vehicle. Beyond just how it is powered, the Volvo EX90 also incorporates the need for aerodynamic efficiency into a progressive, Scandinavian aesthetic. Inspired by a classic Swedish form-follows-function approach, designers at Volvo Cars were able to incorporate cutting-edge Safe Space Technology, including world-first roof mounted lidar, that allows the Volvo EX90 to look out for not just its drivers but all other road users, too.  

But tailpipe emissions are only one part of the lifecycle emissions of a vehicle. That’s why Volvo Cars has looked well beyond just electrification when it comes to reducing carbon emissions and has pledged to become a carbon-neutral company by 2040. Rather than leather, the Volvo EX90 features Nordico, a progressive material that’s lighter than leather and more sustainable than vinyl. Made from recycled material such as PET (plastic) bottles and pine resin from responsibly managed forests in Sweden and Finland, Nordico was developed in-house by Volvo Cars to deliver on a new idea of luxury, one infused with Scandinavian values. Also featured inside the Volvo EX90 cabin are translucent, FSC™-certified (Forest Stewardship Council) wood panels. Backlit with warm, patterned light, these panels create a soothing Scandinavian atmosphere that evokes the Nordic wilderness. Throughout the vehicle, the Volvo EX90 uses more recycled materials than any Volvo car before it. 25% of the aluminum used in manufacturing is recycled, as is 15% of the steel. Over 105 pounds of recycled plastics and bio-based materials find their way into the Volvo EX90, rather than into a landfill or worse. 

And it’s not just Volvo EX90 drivers that will benefit from good, green design. Because every Volvo EX90 is hardware-ready for bi-directional charging, this is the first Volvo car that has the ability to—literally— give back. Bi-directional charging is a technology that allows power to flow not only into the battery but also out of it. This means that the Volvo EX90 can act like a power bank, one that can provide power to your home during a storm or even charge another electric vehicle that has run low. And outside of emergency scenarios, bi-directional charging can allow you to run your home and charge your car more sustainably. With the right equipment, the Volvo EX90 can charge your home until energy from the grid is cheaper or cleaner, and can even wait to charge until power is coming from renewable sources. Part of a network of similarly equipped cars, this could contribute to a more efficient and stable power grid everywhere, one with a lower carbon footprint.
