Luxury Boat HMI 2018-2019

Designers: ROBRADY design team, ROBRADY design, Sarasota, Florida, USA
Manufacturer: Medallion Instrumentation Systems, Spring Lake, Michigan, USA

The HMI experience for this luxury watercraft represents a seamless union of form, function, and process. The instrumentation and display design was developed in conjunction with the backend programming to deliver an HMI solution that reflected the elegance of the high-end boat.

The design process began with extensive wireframing and storyboarding to inventory and understand all the features of the boat’s system—the functions they performed, how they performed them, and how to optimize user interaction. With final storyboard approval from key stakeholders, the design team then generated all the required assets and built a clean, digital interface using the state-of-the-art implementation software. The fully-realized front-end HMI enabled software engineers to connect their c-code and generate deep-screen data insuring system performance that was on par with its appearance.

With this HMI, elegance isn’t just about the final look, but also the design process. In addition to working hand-in-hand with software engineers to insure a smooth, simultaneous development process, the design team used skins to develop the system’s elegant style instead of “starting from scratch” with each design, making future HMI updates and upgrades as easy as changing an outfit.
