Aided by cutting-edge digital technologies, the façade of Toronto’s Rolex Flagship embodies the high-precision craft, design, and construction that has defined Rolex’s timepieces for over one hundred years. The digitally fabricated limestone facade underlines a fidelity to craftsmanship and material, bringing a modernist high-rise into the 21st century through fluid, organic forms that contrast the building’s rigidity.
The language of the existing modernist façade is seamlessly integrated down into the mullions of the storefront, where the rhythm of the columns recalls the patterns of a watch’s band links. As the mullions trace down the exterior of the high-rise, they begin to slowly bend into subtle and graceful arcs that capture the essence between the existing structure and the distinctive Rolex geometries. On the east façade, a CNC parametric composition is etched into the limestone.
The composition was produced by an algorithmic design that was developed in collaboration with computational designer Arturo Tedeschi. The forms that are produced follow the geometric logic of the engravings seen on watch face dials, while at the same time interact in a generative manner that is unique to the structure’s elevation. The curvilinear window openings reflect the polished watch crystals, and the white stone façade emulates the durable, craft-forward ambition that contributes to the watch’s timelessness.
At the intersection of technology and craft, the geometries of the watch are translated into architecture through the exploration stone techniques – a seemingly brutal material transforms into a delicate and airy medium through subtle contours and smooth bends. Against the steel of the modernist high-rise that houses the storefront, the unconventional material boasts a structural solution that frees modern architecture of its rigid constraints. The result is a harmonious integration of innovative materials that capture the essence of Rolex’s quintessential design. The store will officially open its doors on December 1, 2023.
