Designing the Stop to Opioid Addiction

Unprecedented challenges require truly innovative thinking on many levels and from many disciplines. To address the unprecedented opioid epidemic in America, a design thinking approach has resulted in the Prescribed Interval Limit Lock (PILL), a smart dispenser that communicates, controls, monitors, and reports in real-time, patient adherence to Rx medication, delivering a realistic protocol to stop the start of opioid addiction.

PILL’s pre-programmed data core insures individual pills are unlocked only at prescribed times, respectively collecting patient data. At the end of a patient’s prescription, PILL is returned, the core is fully re-programmed and re-charged for another patient, the tamper evident casing is recycled, and any unused medication is safely destroyed.

With its capability for digitally managing dose intervals, PILL disrupts the potential for addiction, overdose, and diversion, insuring the proper use of opioids. Data provided by the smart dispenser gives physicians actual metrics on their patients’ actual Rx medication use, creating an opportunity for greater influence over their patients’ care and giving stakeholders across the healthcare industry deeper insight into efficacy, toxicity, and behavior on a micro as well as macro scale.

PILL’s reusable data core can be upgraded to accommodate features such as QR coding, smart phone apps, and other meaningful healthcare innovations, delivering personal digital Rx medication technology at an extremely low unit cost and expanding PILL’s impact on the opioid addiction crisis…and beyond.
