OKU is the world’s first personalized skin coach. A combination of unique skin camera sensor, app and network, OKU helps people achieve their optimal skin health through daily, simple measurements presented in friendly easy-to-understand reports.

OKU looks beneath the surface of your skin and sees what you can't see with the naked eye. An easy-to-understand SkinScore lets you know how your skin is fairing while offering simple solution to keep it at its healthiest. Connecting you to a network of peers and SkinTwins - people that have traits identical to your own – OKU helps you cut through the clutter to select skincare products that actually work for your own unique skin.

Striking a balance between technology and beauty, OKU is a sage guide that helps people navigate the cacophony of skincare products and marketing storylines to make science-backed decision that keeps their skin at its best – today and into the future.

Taking inspiration from social movements, music, art, objects and interactions that sparked a sense of self-confidence and expression we found a form and architecture that perfectly navigated tech and beauty. Leveraging a rich color palette, simple forms, and at-a-glance interfaces, OKU’s design carefully combines science and lifestyle to create an honest, reliable and deeply personal device.

Pushing against organic forms, we harkened around things that could convey exactness, yet also feel soft and inviting. The idea for a cube/pixel form navigates the boundary between technology and beauty, is easy to hold for a scan, small enough to not draw the room’s attention, and maintains a structure that communicates accuracy and assurance. OKU’s bottom-side is a soft-brushed aluminum, bringing a welcoming, almost scientific sensation when placed upon the face. A recessed lens cover opening removes the feeling of a camera, keeps the lenses clean and ensures the best possible scan. A swappable three color palette of the cube, charging station and cord provides an endless amount of personality and customization to standout for the new start-up.

Objects intersecting connects to OKU usage – using form and technology to reveal the secrets of your skin. Magnets that reject the cube if the product and charger are misaligned, along with concentric squares ensure concise alignment when charging. We simplified the process to scan as well, reducing it a single button – scan. OKU’s dock is designed to support and lift the tech from harmful places in the bathroom. To compliment the asymmetry of people, the cube rests gently in an off-centered stance on a charging dock. The dock is complete with a drainage hole so OKU can easily live in the bathroom – a key to encouraging everyday skin measurement.

Overall, OKU’s design enables the young startup to take a courageous leap into a saturated market, where stigmas of beauty had yet to be evaded by a brand and product with a bold new promise: personalized skin insights and foresights. By putting people first, OKU puts the spotlight on where it matters most, the person looking to have their skin be at its best.
