DOJO 2015

Manufacturer: DOJO-Labs, Inc., Palo Alto, California, USA

DOJO is the gatekeeper to your connected home, an innovative Home I.o.T security system. A first of its kind system – a Box, Pebble, app and cloud-based service, DOJO connects outside your home’s router to monitor all inbound and outbound digital traffic to keep your devices secure.

Created with a keen insight into our home routines, DOJO’s white Box connects to your router – wherever it is hidden – while the detachable digital Pebble is meant to be placed out in the open for glanceable visibility, calling your attention when needed to keep you in control wherever your phone is. Ambient lights ripple under the pebbles exterior to indicate system status and providing a gentle reminder that everything is OK or provide instant notification when an issue needs attention.

DOJO’s unique combination of Box and Pebble establish a new personality in home security – one that does not intimidate, calmly visible and yet fully in control –signaling a sophisticated way forward for securing the myriad of I.o.T devices in our homes.

To amplify DOJO’s brand, we sought an amorphous form that had a natural, familiar and clam quality that spoke to the same harmony found within Zen. Many sketches and dozens of hand-carved foam models later we hit upon contrasting soft and hard forms, the perfectly imperfect humble shape of a pebble and box.

DOJO combines two juxtaposing forms into a single harmonious product. ’s unique form and physical interface are derived from insights into how we live with tech in our homes: Internet connections are hidden away and phones are placed aside when we are home. DOJO navigates this with a clever two-part system of Bbox and Ppebble, makes the interface the central message of the design. It is built to allow the product to be positioned in two places – the Bbox hidden near the internet-connection’s entry to the home, the Ppebble visible at a glace on a counter or a cabinet.
that simultaneously monitors traffic and indicates security status - across the home environment.

To amplify DOJO’s brand, we sought an amorphous form that had a natural, familiar quality that spoke to the same harmony found within Zen. Hundreds of sketches and dozens of hand-carved foam models later we hit upon contrasting soft and hard forms, the perfectly imperfect humble shape of a pebble and box.

DOJO’s brains are is a in its discreet white box connected to Dojo cloud services, a design that is clear of buttons and complications, simply hardwire it to any router and DOJO is ready to start working. Jutting out and juxtaposing the technical rectangular box is a calm and striking natural organic pebble, nestled gently on top of DOJO. Movable so it can be placed anywhere in the home, the pebble releases Interface from its tether to live in the places we spend our time. Non-technical and balanced yet lustrous, the pebble fits anywhere in the house with a purposeful presence.

A ‘Glanceable Interface’ beats under the pebbles exterior, showing security notifications status with gentle pulses Ripples of activity – white with normal activity, only flashing red if there is an immediate issue. DOJO does away with the defensive, aggressive security paradigm of the past in exchange for a more comfortable, personable product, interface and brand.

DOJO’s CMF color, material and finish reiterates this contrast of stern yet approachable, with the crisp, clean white of the box balanced out by a warm, soft deep brown on the pebble. In this contrast of soft and hard forms, DOJO gives security a calm and reassuring face that is natural and familiar.

The resulting is a study in contrasts and firsts – organic v. technical, moveable glanceable interface v. hardwired connectivity, soft v. hard - is a design language and execution that throws a wrench into the established design vernacular of the security space.

Calmly handling any issue with a confident wisdom, DOJO does away with the defensive, aggressive security paradigm of the past in exchange for a more comfortable, personable product, interface and brand that is a new icon for the security of things.
