Outline

3D printed in steel, the Torq nutcracker turns the business of nut cracking into a precise as well as a fun activity, this product finds its place in the heart of the home. The cylindrical body fits comfortably in hand and provides control over a challenging task. The grooves become the dominant force in the product, as well as the refined visual detail that suggests the intuitive motion it employs.

Background

Owen was able integrate his design philosophy with OTHR to create an heirloom quality product using a transformative and sustainable manufacturing process. Each Torq is made-to-order, allowing the owner to participate in the object’s life from its beginning.

Design Concept

Inspired by the hearth, Owen was able to impart a refined quality to this sturdy material. Referencing industrial components the two part assembly invites movement and invokes a strong sense of kinship.

Design Intent

Using simple mechanical advantage, nut cracking is transformed from an awkward and task-focused process into an approachable and deliberate activity to be shared.

Collaboration, Technology, and Sustainability

The partnership between Owen and OTHR leverages a mutual appreciation for restraint and utility. Once ordered, each Torq is 3D printed and individually numbered before it’s delivered to its home, reducing environmental impacts of waste and warehousing.
