GUEST HOUSE, Wainscott, New York | 2016

Architects: Roger Ferris + Partners

Client: Withheld
General Contractor: Wright & Co. Construction
Photographers: Paúl Rivera Photography

This guest house was designed to serve as a luxury reprieve for visitors to an adjacent traditional estate in the Hamptons.

Two simple gable-shaped volumes of glass are shrouded in horizontal wood slats, providing a delicate, layered interior experience while alluding to traditional barn forms in the region.

The two primary sections of the house create a dialogue between public and private life: the southern form for cooking, relaxing, and poolside dining, while the northern form contains more intimate bedroom and bathing spaces.

Each volume focuses on the view overlooking a pool that faces the ocean beyond.

Within the double- height great room, a perfect rectangular form is inserted as a visual and spatial contrast, serving as the kitchen, pantry, and pool bath.

While the project is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional form, it strives for a certain warmth and comfort through material selection and acute attention to detail.
