The unique culture of today’s Charleston was a defining element of the design for the terminal redevelopment of the Charleston International Airport. Though Charleston’s history is long and rich, the city has evolved into an energetic and competitive metropolis of the twenty-first century.

The Terminal Redevelopment comes at a pivotal time in the city’s history, as the existing 1980s-era airport works to keep pace with the dramatic growth in passenger traffic and the region’s increased importance as a business and tourist hub. The redevelopment allows the airport to grow in capacity from 2.5 million to 4 million passengers annually.

Charleston’s southern hospitality lives side by side with a rich urbanism in the newly renovated airport. The design is polished and modern, yet captures that unique southern sense of openness and warmth. Sustainability and the use of Charleston’s abundant natural daylight were two important elements of the design, with colors and finishes inspired by the landscape of the Lowcountry where the land meets the water. Historic precedents such as the “single house” typology inspired planning principles where public spaces replace gardens and front porches. The design of the new Central Hall gives the airport a “heart” with a 25-foot-tall, floor-to-ceiling glass curtainwall that gives visitors a visual connection from curbside to ticketing and baggage claim as they enter the area which is bathed in light from the central dome and clerestory windows.

In addition to 5 new gates, the concourses underwent complete renovations that include new seating areas and restrooms. The improved amenities dramatically increase the comfort level of the passengers and feature power, comfortable seating and raised tables—all giving passengers options galore. A new concessions program goes hand in hand with the renovation and brings local and regional vendors into the airport. The design blurs the distinction between gate holding areas and concessions, making passengers feel more comfortable shopping and dining when their gate is visible.

Charleston’s distinct sense of hospitality and grace has been instilled in the new architecture by creating a noteworthy interior civic space for the airport and improved wayfinding and functionality for passengers.
