This small extension is an answer to many complex requests; to replace an old shed in a narrow backyard, to create a separation between the owner’s living space and their neighbor’s terrace, and to create a separate apartment for friends.
Given the semi-buried situation of the site and being on the property boundary led us to build a concrete structure, it solves the sealing problem due to the supported ground, and it marks the complex border between two close entities.
The difficulty was then to bring light into this partially buried building. Most of the light comes from above. The shower space is topped by a concrete volume that hides a window. The pyramid is a screen that hides the close neighboring house and covers the living space. It is built with timber beams and topped by a horizontal window. The sealing is made with a membrane. A gutter around the pyramid gives a dynamic aspect to this raw construction.
