ITF House - Scott Kyson - United Kingdom

ITF House displays the importance of understanding ancestral building techniques that have gone before us. The project sees the refurbishment of an imposing Grade II listed Victorian factory. Behind its grandiose exterior, a feverish workforce manufactured shoe polish throughout the late 1800s. The works comprise the full remodeling and interior design of the building and see the reinstatement of the historic open work-floors to provide open-plan working environments. This, in turn, allowed for the celebration of the Victorian craftsmanship of riveted ironwork, brickwork, and vaulted ceilings.

The new material palette reflects the building’s heritage utilizing a natural palette of clay plaster, timber, and steel screens, whilst new services are restricted to run parallel with primary walls and access floors thus not detracting from the delicate overhead ironwork.

This project demonstrates Kyson’s ability to find the careful balance our historic building stock asks of us when achieving modern working requirements.
