Extension of Nadar High School - Djamel Kara

Draveil, France

"The spirit of the forest ..." Sénart forest has been the conceptual material of this project.

The high school will almost double its reception capacity from 2024, going from 700 to 1 300 students. This objective requires various types of interventions on the building, ranging from the construction of new surfaces to the expansion and restructuring of existing functions, in particular half-board.

To the program's diversity of the project: science rooms, laboratories, first aid rooms, general education, sports halls, dining hall, relocated administration, the architecture responds with an iconic and renewed image of the school.

The new wing, in total autonomy, is developed over two-tiered levels connecting, at each level, to the existing building. The progressive and flexible architectural staging system allows most of the classrooms to benefit from a view of the forest horizon.

A partial elevation in R + 2 partially meets the needs for classrooms but above all allows them to be fully connected to the same floor, which considerably facilitates the flow of people.

The courtyard concept accompanies the entire linear building overlooking the landscaped courtyard, offering continuous shelter, with differentiated atmospheres.

They will be eco-responsible, using mainly bio-based materials favoring the dry sector and prefabrication. The roofs and overhangs will be largely vegetated.
