In collaboration with the client, Tishman Speyer, SHoP designed the waterfront residential building of the firm's PIER 4 Project in Boston's Seaport District.
A pivotal waystation on the city's extensive coastal promenade, the Harborwalk, a lasting contribution to the ongoing revitalization of the Seaport, and a drastic departure from the neighborhood's traditional architectural profile, PIER 4 is the only residential building in the neighborhood surrounded by water on three sides.
Comprised of 106 condominium homes that all feature private outdoor space and waterfront views, PIER 4 also offers curated retail and dining destinations on its ground floor, along with a new one-acre public waterfront park at the tip of the site.
The building's intelligent curved design was inspired by the distinctly New England pastime of sailing, and is meant to evoke an image of a ship meandering through the Boston Harbor; additionally, its unique white brick facade, alternating windows, and staggered private terraces are intended to pick up and reflect light off the water, giving the impression of movement as though they are dancing along the side of the building.
Tishman Speyer, which develops and operates properties to meet high sustainability standards all over the world, expects to seek LEED Gold certification for the project.
