Manifold House | Arlington, Virginia, USA | 2017

Architects: David Jameson Architect
Client: Private
General Contractor: Sagatov Design and Build
Photographer: Paul Warchol

Inspired by the client’s passion for rebuilding vintage Italian scooters, Manifold house is an ode to the precision of manufactured assemblages.

The house is uniquely situated at the border between a suburban residential enclave and a mid-density business district.

As such, the house acts as a scale modulator with a distinctly urban scale in order to maximize the allowable footprint on the property.

The house is composed of a prefabricated exoskeletal frame that supports a custom extruded aluminum curtain wall system.

Weathered steel louvers are to be mounted to the frame without interruption and serve as a screen to provide privacy and moderate light.

The ground floor contains an expansive, two-story void that spans the entire length of the house.

All public functions, such as a living room, dining room, and kitchen, are placed sequentially along with the void.

A mezzanine on the floor above permeates into the void through large openings with glass rails.

Modestly sized bedrooms and a master suite are located on the top floor, along with access to a roof deck.
