Architects: SheltonMindel
Client: Private
Photographers: Michael Moran

Transbay is a 60-story mixed-use tower in San Francisco. SheltonMindel designed the interiors of the residential units, amenities floors, and lobbies by seamlessly integrating the geographical context of the San Francisco Bay and the building envelope into the interior spaces.

The organic shape of this building designed by Cesar Pelli informed the parti for the plans, sections, elevations, and the aesthetic for the interior.
As the building echoes the shape of the San Francisco Bay itself, the floorplans of each of the residential units open up along the window wall as a secondary means of circulation allowing views from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Oakland Bridge.

The lobby spaces embrace the various cultures of San Francisco and include the influence of the Far East, the arts and crafts movement, and modernists such as Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

The vertical core circulation of the building is essentially a tree trunk that rises from the earth and moves through the clouds up in the sky and culminates into a gothic rooftop experience piercing through the fog. The rooftop enclosure and aesthetic are sympathetic to the elevated park walkway and garden below.
