MBB undertook a comprehensive six-year project to rejuvenate Trinity Church Wall Street in Lower Manhattan, a historic icon dating back to the 1840s. Their efforts extended beyond mere restoration, encompassing a holistic transformation aimed at enhancing the church's functionality, sustainability, and spiritual significance.
The project began with thorough research and engagement with the Trinity Church community, leading to the development of a phased master plan. This plan addressed deferred maintenance issues while aligning with contemporary programmatic needs. Key upgrades included improved accessibility, enhanced lighting, acoustic improvements for better sound quality during worship and music performances, and modern infrastructure to support the church's operations.
Significant attention was given to the churchyard, a tranquil oasis in bustling Lower Manhattan and the final resting place of notable figures like Robert Fulton and Alexander Hamilton. Enhancements to landscaping and lighting were made to create a more inviting and serene environment.
Architecturally, the neo-Gothic structure designed by Richard Upjohn underwent meticulous restoration. This included the restoration of original architecture and ornamentation, insulation upgrades, installation of new clerestory windows, and the addition of new clergy and visitor spaces. The sanctuary was equipped with quieter and more energy-efficient mechanical systems and protective glazing to preserve its acoustics and reduce energy consumption.
The interior redesign aimed at making the space more inclusive and functional. It featured a reconfiguration of the chancel area to ensure accessibility for all celebrants, including the installation of an ADA lift. Advanced audio-visual equipment was discreetly integrated to support the broadcast of services and concerts without detracting from the church's aesthetic appeal.
Throughout the renovation, special attention was paid to minimizing visual clutter and maximizing aesthetic coherence. This included routing extensive conduits and cables discreetly behind walls and floors, and integrating custom-designed lighting fixtures that complemented the church's architectural style.
In essence, MBB's transformative approach not only revitalized Trinity Church Wall Street but also reinforced its role as a spiritual and cultural cornerstone of Lower Manhattan, ready to serve its community for years to come.
