Over 150 buildings from a shortlist of over 400 have won the prestigious 2022 American Architecture Awards® for the best new architecture designed and constructed by American architects and by international architects with offices in the United States.

Now in its 28th year, The American Architecture Awards are organized by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies—jointly presenting this annual, prestigious program for Design Excellence and for the best and next contributions to innovative contemporary American architecture.

The American Architecture Awards are the nation’s highest and oldest public awards given by a non-commercial, non-trade affiliated, public arts, culture, and educational institution.

“For 28 years, The American Architecture Awards have celebrated the best contemporary architecture and highlights the many ways buildings and spaces can improve lives,” states Christian Narkiewicz-Laine, architecture critic and Museum President, The Chicago Athenaeum.

“Designers based here, and the architecture realized in their cities, demonstrate how design may be harnessed to address the pressing threats of our time, climate change; the economy; and the crisis of so many people without housing,” Narkiewicz-Laine continues.

“What is important to note is the expansion of sustainability strategies that are seamlessly integrated in aesthetics.”

“The United States continues to be a forward-leaning capital of architecture.”

“This year’s winning projects are also characterized as exuding urban generosity, a sense of dignity, and timelessness—the absolute paramount definition of Good Design.”

In October, a jury of independent Italian architects, educators, and planners convened remotely to select the winners of the 2022 American Architecture Awards.

The five-member jury selected submissions that demonstrate design achievement, including a sense of place, purpose, history, and environmental sustainability.

Juror members included:

• Claudio Raviolo, Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel

• Carlo Ratti, CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati

• Mario Mazzer, Studio Mario Mazzer
• Piero Lissoni, Lissoni & Partners

• Samuel Sordi, Pininfarina of America Corp.
